Bathrooms that keep working

The bathroom puts wet floors, hard surfaces and standing on one leg in one small room. We rebuild it around how you move.

We ask you to show us how you get in and out of the shower, then plan the room from that: where the seat goes, which wall can take a bar, how wide the door has to be. Nothing in the finished room looks medical.

What's included

  • A curbless or low-threshold shower with a bench or fold-down seat

  • Grab bars fixed into solid blocking, never into drywall alone

  • A comfort-height toilet with room to turn

  • A handheld shower on a bar, with a valve you reach from outside the spray

  • Slip-resistant tile on a floor that slopes to the drain

  • A light, and a night light on the way from the bedroom

What changes the cost

We don't print a price for this work. These decide the number you'll get in writing.

  • The floor

On a concrete slab, a curbless shower means cutting the slab and re-pouring it to slope. On a raised floor, the drain can drop between the joists.

  • Size and layout

Keeping the shower where the tub was costs less than moving the drain, the door or a wall.

  • Tile or solid panels

Solid panels go up quickly and have fewer joints. Tile gives more choice and takes more labor.

  • How many bars, and where

Each bar needs solid wood behind it. Where there isn't any, we open the wall and add it.

  • Permits and approvals

Plumbing changes need a permit. A condo or association usually wants its board's approval first.

How it goes

  1. 01

Step 1: Show us how you do it

We watch you get in and out of the shower, and measure the room and the door.

  2. 02

Step 2: The plan and the written scope

A drawing, the products by name, and a price for each piece.

  3. 03

    Step 3: The work

The bath is out of use for a stretch, so we plan where you'll wash before we begin.

  4. 04

    Step 4: The last test

You use every seat and bar before we call it finished.

Questions about this work

Can I keep a bathtub?

Yes. Many people keep one, or choose a tub with a lower side. The scope shows what each costs against a full shower.

Will a curbless shower flood the bathroom?

Not when it's built right. The floor slopes to the drain and the waterproofing covers the whole floor, not only the shower. We show you the layers in the scope.

What isn't included?

Medical equipment you buy from a dealer, and changes to rooms outside the scope. The scope lists both.
